Rubble Bubbles
Saturday, December 3: 10AM - 2PM
and
Sunday December 4, 2022: 11AM 4PM

Picture
Hi everyone. As you all know, we have closed permanently in Windsor.  Since we are very happy about all the FIRSTS we achieved and our successes we brought to this town in such a short period of time, we'd like to share some of our award-winning story with people who would like a piece of our unique history. To that end, we are offering pieces of our Top-50-ranked wine bar/restaurant for sale. We have included a bunch of photos, below, but there is still much more on the attached list. We are calling this event *Rubble Bubbles* as you can purchase a glass of bubbles (or still wine) while you shop through the rubble of our (soon-to-be) old location at 43 Water Street, Windsor, NS.

Remember, Remember The 5th Of November
Flamenco en Rouge - Guido Fawkes Night
November 5, 2022 7-9PM
Doors open at 6PM

Picture
Please join us for our final ticketed event on November 5, Guido Fawkes Night. As you know, since the very beginning of our gastro-oenological saga, we have made innovative inroads to provide journeys to delight as many of your senses as possible with cuisines from many of our own travels and experiences. Consequently, we have decided to riff (as it were) on the famous Guy Fawkes Night by celebrating Guido Fawkes, Guy’s nom de guerre during his tenure as a Spanish spy during the Eighty Years War.
Picture
On the one hand, we have always enjoyed celebrating The Gunpowder Plot because, really, who wouldn’t like to join the practice of burning effigies and setting off fireworks? As we know, this infamous attempt to assassinate the Protestant King James by the 13 Catholic conspirators ended very badly for them, and Guy Fawkes, in particular. While a failed terrorist attack that occurred over 400 years ago under the shadow of a threatening plague may appear to be an odd celebration to some at this particular moment in our post-lockdown lives, we love contrast and incongruity, so we also revel in referring to this day as one to memorialise “The Only Man Ever to Enter Parliament with Honest Intentions” in a big way!  As some of you know, we also have a thing for the numb er 13, BTW ;-)!
To that end, for all of us gathering at Winegrunt on the evening of November 5, we will be celebrating Guido Fawkes Night with a thunderous Flamenco Event featuring Flamenco en rouge’s troupe of Martine Durier-Copp (Artistic Director, choreographer and dancer), Ruth Pacis (Dancer), Marina Roussakova (Dancer), Brenley Heaver (Singer), and Matthew Martin (Guitar).  This will be loud, dazzling, explosive, fun, and, of course, tasty!  Winegrunt’s chefs (Astrid for the mains and Rob for the desserts) have put together an à la carte menu that is scrumptiously-specially-Spanish with the hopes of stimulating your appetite for more (Plus Ultra!)!
Picture

Our dear sommelier friend, Chris Bouton, of The Port NSLC Halifax, will describe the wine pairing options to all of us in order to maximize our palatal pleasure.

Although we will have a few private events at our current location before closing down for good, THIS IS IT! On November 5th, we go out with a bang! And, of course, we chose this date so that everyone may “Remember, remember …”!

The Mike Murley 3
Saturday,  September 17, 7pm to 9pm
Tickets $20 or $10 for students

Picture
Winegrunt is thrilled and honoured to be able to offer our patrons the opportunity to enjoy the music of The Mike Murley 3 on Saturday, September 17, from 7pm to 9pm.   While we do take some pride in having developed a solid reputation for offering top-tier music at our little joint since our opening in July 2018, we realize that we merely bask in the glow of the talented musicians who play Winegrunt.  Even through the COVID era (except for mandatory shutdowns, of course), we continued to bring in excellent musicians.  Well, now that we have turned a corner (of sorts), this exceptional trio of accomplished musicians has come all the way out to Mike Murley’s hometown of Windsor, NS for a Special Event Concert and they have raised the bar higher still.  While we maintain the right to boast of our musical lineups over the years, the talent is exclusively that of the musicians and so too is the right to receive all the praise.  This evening is exceptionally cool and will certainly rank among the most memorable in the history of Winegrunt Wine Bar.   Although some of you will be familiar with this stellar lineup, please read their bios, below, check them out on social media, and play their lps, cds and mp3 tracks to get a more complete idea of the kind of exquisite and truly unique treat that is being offered to you at Winegrunt thanks to these talented musicians. We hope you come out to hear their gorgeous music paired with our food and drink that you can order à la carte from our award-winning menu for an extraordinary evening at “the heart of the Windsor strip!”
Tickets are $20 per person or $10 for students.
Please contact us at info@winegrunt.com for tickets. This night will be musical magic!

MIKE MURLEY

An engaging, lyrical saxophonist, Windsor native Mike Murley is one of Canada’s most celebrated and well-respected jazz artists.  He has played on fourteen Juno Award-winning recordings since 1990, seven as a leader or co-leader, seven as a sideman. His most recent Junos include The North (2018), Metalwood’s Twenty (2017), and his trio’s Test of Time (2013).  Murley moved to Toronto in 1981 and has enjoyed a career that has spanned a wide stylistic spectrum.  Recordings with legendary Canadian artists such as Ed Bickert, Rob McConnell, and Guido Basso showcase the saxophonist’s talents in the mainstream standard repertoire.  On the more contemporary side, Murley has collaborated frequently with younger generations of improviser/composers including pianist David Braid and guitarist David Occhipinti.  He is also well known for his work with the three-time Juno Award winning electric jazz group Metalwood. In addition, he has recorded and performed with numerous international artists including David Liebman, Renee Rosnes, John Schofield, Norma Winstone, as well as the late Paul Bley, John Abercrombie, and Kenny Wheeler.
As an educator, Murley has held positions at the University of Toronto, York University, Humber College, and as a visiting member of faculty at the Banff School of Fine Arts.  He also served as Jazz Area Chair/Coordinator at both U of T (2016-18, 2020-21) and York (2008-11).
In 2022, Murley retired from teaching and moved to Halifax NS from where he continues to tour nationally and internationally.

In 2011, he was the recipient of the CBC Galaxy Rising Star award and been recognized by FACTOR, The Canada Council for the Arts, The Conseil des Arts et des Lettres du Québec, and The Ontario Arts Council in support of projects ranging from national and international tours, album production, and research and creation.                                        As a band leader, he has performed extensively across the globe and has collaborated with many celebrated artists from around the world including: Christine and Ingrid Jensen, Ben Monder, Chet Doxas, The Bombadils, Tinalley String Quartet, Kelly Jefferson, Joel Miller, Denzal Sinclaire, and the Soulpepper Theatre Company to name a few. He currently resides in Halifax, Nova Scotia with his wife, singer-songwriter Angela Sande, and their corgi, Raisin.

ANDREW MILLER

Andrew is an adopted Maritimer with a serious love for the ocean, the culture, and the growing Halifax community.   A native Albertan, Andrew has spent most of the last decade in Toronto, working as a drummer, composer, and music educator.  He has toured across North America, South America, Europe and Asia.  Since settling in Nova Scotia, Andrew has firmly established himself in the diverse Halifax music scene.  In addition to a busy schedule as a sideman, he leads a regular Thursday night jazz gig at the Kyo Kitchen. kyohalifax.ca/jazz-club.  Andrew has performed at Winegrunt in the past with excellent bandmates from Halifax.

With an obvious nod to the high-speed Italian express train of the 1950s and, of course, to the luckiest of all the Italian playing cards. The reference to *sette* (seven) reflects the seven principal ingredients of this Italian-styled hamburger. We start with an Oulton’s ground beef patty infused with our own olive tapenade (uno), topped with Roma Cheese Smoked Scamorza (due), greens (tre), red onions (quattro), crispy prosciutto crudo (cinque), red pepper aioli (sei), housed in our hand-made Basil bun (sette). Bello! SETTEBELLO!

New Year's Evening

Picture
Dear friends and patrons,
In light of the most recent developments on the local COVID-19 front, we have decided it would be wisest and safest to cancel our NEW YEAR’S EVEning event. To begin, the current restrictions do not allow for more than a solo artist to perform in a venue such as ours. Although we adhered to all the other measures, including vaccination requirements, social distancing, mask-wearing, and the extensive use of hand sanitizer and other forms of hygiene, the performance of a quartet is not allowed. Of greater importance and concern is the steadily increasing number of COVID-19 cases throughout the province. As much as we would love to celebrate with you, the risk to health does appear to be increasing so we prefer to err on the side of caution and look forward to safely celebrating with you in the near future when the situation improves. We apologize for any inconvenience this decision may cause with your plans but we are all living in particular circumstances that do mandate caution. Please contact us at info@winegrunt.com in order to organize your reimbursements and please keep your eyes open for other scheduled events in the near future.
For example, our Mardi Gras celebration is still planned for March 1, 2022. Mardi Gras at Winegrunt has become a successful tradition over the years with great Dixieland Jazz and a Cajun Feast being synonymous with Winegrunt celebrations in the early part of the year!
In the meantime, we wish you all a very Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, and all the best for the New Year!
Stay safe and enjoy the good things!

Festival Ibérico!
October 5, 2021
6-9PM

Picture
In honour of the Treaty of Zamora, signed on 5 October 1143, that recognized the independence of the Kingdom of Portugal from the Kingdom of León, Winegrunt is hosting an Iberian Evening to celebrate the flavours and sounds of Spain and Portugal. To that end, we have put together a fun and delicious program comprising a Chef-inspired Five-Course Food Fiesta, paired with the Spanish music of Halifax’s Bossa Nova Scotia for the ticket price of $100 per person. In addition, we have Guest Speaker, Craig Campbell, Sommelier, who will discuss the suggested pairings of the particular Iberian libations that we offer at modest prices for this special evening.

The gastronomical part of your evening begins with Portuguese Sopa de Legumes, a classic vegetable soup made of some of the very best local, in-season vegetables and seasonings. That is followed by Fried Stuffed Spanish Olives served with our Saffron Aioli. We’re confident you’ll love our version of Aceitunas rebozadas con alioli de azafràn. Portuguese Piri Piri Chicken, or Frango Piri-Piri, is a spicy, colonial dish with origins in Angola and Mozambique. Sourced from nearby Oulton’s Farms, these chicken legs boast lemon, garlic, chili peppers, paprika, olive oil, and a bit of sugar for a unique and tasty treat for your palate. The Paella (à la Winegrunt) comprises elements of some of the very best Spanish versions of this classic dish, including meat and seafood with saffron rice. This is followed by the Sorbete de cava y limón (Spanish ‘Champage’ Citrus Sorbet) before proceeding to the Portuguese Bolo Xadrez (Checkerboard Cake) that will WOW your palate with its alternating Vanilla/Chocolate flavours and your eyes with its intricate design.

This culinary tour de force will be enhanced by the inspired wine and spirit choices of our Guest Sommelier, Craig Campbell, who will describe our special list in relation to the Iberian menu. Throughout all of this, you will be treated to the gorgeous sounds of Bossa Nova Scotia’s Spanish / Latin music that, taken all together, will bring you as close to the Iberian peninsula as Windsor, the Valley, and Nova Scotia can get on a Tuesday night in October.
Tasty, tasty fun! ¡Salud!
